Swiss Kubernetes Study 2026: Kubernetes Between Sovereignty and Operational Reality

Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard for modern application platforms. At the same time, many companies face the challenge of balancing technology, security, compliance, and operational overhead.

To gain a better understanding of the current market situation in Switzerland, we surveyed 40 companies in the software development sector about their experiences, expectations, and challenges related to Kubernetes. The results paint a nuanced picture: Swiss companies value data control, Swiss law, and local providers. At the same time, trust and a willingness to pay are not driven by “Swissness” alone, but by demonstrable technical expertise and clear operational accountability.

Key Findings

Safety is more important than price

Security, compliance, and availability are among the most important criteria when selecting a Kubernetes platform. For most companies, price is not a top priority. Rather, the key question is how to reduce risks and ensure stable operational models.

Many companies underestimate their operating expenses

57.5% of respondents say they tended to underestimate or significantly underestimated the operational effort required by Kubernetes. Issues such as security, monitoring, updates, governance, and operational organization, in particular, often turn out to be more complex than originally expected.

Managed Kubernetes Is Gaining Importance

Managed Kubernetes and hybrid operating models are preferred by the majority. Companies want to benefit from external expertise without completely relinquishing control over their platform.

Data storage in Switzerland remains important

90% of participants rate the provider's location as important or somewhat important. Data storage in Switzerland, as well as Swiss law and the forum of jurisdiction, also continue to play a significant role.

"Swissness" alone does not inspire trust

However, the study also shows that a Swiss provider does not automatically enjoy a trust advantage. Trust is built on technical quality, availability, transparency, and clearly defined responsibilities.

What do these findings mean for businesses?

The results show that Kubernetes is becoming increasingly important from a strategic perspective. At the same time, the discussion is shifting away from technology alone toward issues related to operations, security, accountability, and governance.

Companies that want to successfully implement Kubernetes must therefore consider not only the platform itself, but also its long-term operation, organizational requirements, and available resources.
